Jess on Tap: For the Love of Beer

You know, when I came up with the name of this column, Christie and I joked about the irony of being “on tap” despite the fact that I didn’t drink beer. Until recently, I had (almost) no relationship with beer.

In the beginning (aka the college years), beers were a means of getting drunk on those unlucky nights when the frat house didn’t provide vodka Koolaid in a giant plastic cooler. But after that period (maybe because of that period) beer had had little place in my life. Sure, there was the occasional fruit lambic or hard cider. But wine and cocktails reigned supreme and left little room for competition.

Still, there were times when I wished I liked beer. You know the backyard BBQ where there was only beer or Smirnoff Ice (wretch!). Or hanging with friends in a laid-back pub where a wine order received a raised eyebrow and a look of confusion from the bartender.

Oh and did I mention living in Belgium, the world’s beer mecca, for five years?

It all changed one day last summer when I was introduced to a sour beer by a desperate bartender who insisted that there is a beer for everyone. From sour beers to triples to farmhouse ales –its been a delightful journey. Twelve months later, and I have solid beer belly as evidence of just how right that bartender was.

And THAT is how I found myself last week as the special guest at the offices of DrinkPhilly –a fantastic website and resource for reviews, events, and happy hour details all across Philadelphia– where I got to taste a very special beer called Savor Flowers.
