THE URBAN GIRL'S SURVIVAL GUIDE

Introducing WorkingGirl!

Editor’s Note: Hello lovely readers!  In order to fill a void here at CG Central we’ve decided to introduce another lovely CityGirl.  Meet Alison–our latest regular contributor who, when not being a fabulous young 20-something, is out looking for a job.  Follow her search on Thursdays as she faces the trials and tribulations of the job hunt in DC.

Part 1:

Dearest City Girls-

I am Alison, which means I’m in my mid-twenties, educated, artsy, and super social. This, also, means I just graduated from Penn State with a Master’s in Voice Performance and Pedagogy (Go Lions!) If you are unfamiliar with this degree (as many people are…) it means that I sing opera, teach private singing lessons, and I specialize in voice rehabilitation. Sounds swanky, I know. And I just recently moved to the DC area to pursue a career in music and the arts… sure.

Let me set this up for you… I have always been a very goal-oriented, eager individual. I graduated from high school when I was 15 and completed 2 degrees by the age of 20.   I am what one might call a “dweeb.”

Everything has been working in my favor, as far as school is concerned- I’m pretty sure it’s because I spent a great deal of time in the library (Again, “dweeb.”)

Then I decided to move to DC.

Nothing has really changed as far as my motivation and dorkiness towards music… Although, ladies, it is freakin’ impossible to land a job in the DC metro area.

In order to make ends meet and not rely on a sugar daddy, I recently took a job at a high-end accessories store. Yes… I have a masters and I am going to be selling leather goods … unless the music gods (and I know they’re out there, I learned about them in a mythology course) are willing to grant me a job.

On the bright side, I’ll have some killer shoes for my next interview.

Part 2:

This is my rant and I’m sticking to it.

Dearest employers,

I completely understand that your employees quit or move on to “bigger and better things”… What I don’t understand is why you post a job opening, interview hopeful little Alison, only to not return her emails for 4 weeks? According to your receptionist, the position has yet to be filled. I get it, you’re busy… but wouldn’t you prefer to fill that position you spent the time advertising?!

Actually, you seem so unorganized that I don’t even know if I want to work for you..!

I take that back- I’m sorry, that was harsh. I would love to work for you and receive your employer paid benefits. Just please- call me back.

Tenderly,

Hopeful little Alison

I hear you Alison. Looking for a job in DC is a whole different kind of work, like "volunteering" to run your own business to sell.............yourself.
  • Welcome! Excited to read and good luck!
