THE URBAN GIRL'S SURVIVAL GUIDE

Trendspotting: The Debbie Gibson Look

Debbie Gibson may no longer appear regularly on your TV or YouTube but her sense of fashion is still alive and well.

No not “Debrah” of the later years who posed for Playboy and all the other nonsense. The original Debbie Gibson who wore those fantastic black hats and started the long jean shorts look (we also have Dirty Dancing to thank for that). Anyway, here are a couple of my favorite pieces —all alive, well, and available for purchase in a store near you. The 80s and 90s are indeed back.

The Hat: So it’s not a fedora, but these round brimmed hats are definitely making a comeback in a big way. As I mentioned yesterday, Orianthi is wearing one in her According to You video. She’s even rocking the Gibson vest. Deja Vu anyone?

The Wavy Hair: What once was the bobbed perm is now called “beach waves” but the outcome is the same. I don’t have any sources but I believe Debbie’s waves were natural and not of the chemical rinse variety…

The Knotted Headband: Soft stretchy headbands are big right now. I personally love the super thin ones that have barrette like beaded patches that sit neatly on your head. Debbie started the knotted jersey headband trend (much thicker) which came in solid colors and the famous bandanna variety. This look has lost no luster for me. In fact, you may see me with a bandanna headband this week. Dare me!

The Jean Shorts: Long shorts are definitely back. As a short girl, I’m not a big fan. Mine have to be super short or down to my ankle or else I look like a midget. But for YOU my tall friends, this is a look to embrace. Comfortable, casual, and on-trend. If only Debbie’s long legs were attainable…….. sigh……..

The Vest: Vests are everywhere. Soft ones, suited ones, drapey ones —you name it. I personally love the long soft ones that you pair with a tank. Debbie’s vest and collared shirt look is a bit too business-literal for me (though you DO have to love how she pairs it with the super casual ripped jean shorts) but I’d pair that vest with a white slub cotton tee and instantly update the look. You know?

The Keds: Ok, Keds — I can take em or leave em. But boat shoesyou know I love boat shoes. Just slightly different in look, they fit into the Debbie Genre quite seamlessly in my opinion.

Double Watches: Ok this one is not in style because people don’t even WEAR watches anymore, but can we reconsider? Seriously, how cute is that look? Or maybe we can bring back the double black jelly bracelet (perhaps a grown-up version of silly bandz)? Is anybody with me?

So tell me, what’s your favorite Debbie look? And would you wear any/all of the above today?
