City Files: Day About Philly
Posted by Leigh, "Gal About Philly" - 29/07/10 at 11:07 amLeigh, our “Gal About Philly” tells us about her day about Philly (with a broken shoe).
Sundays are meant to be a day for rest and relaxation – a day not to worry about the little things. As I traipsed around the city on what was supposed to be a stress-free Sunday, I heard the most horrific sound…“RIIIIIP!”
No it wasn’t my dress (thank goodness!) it was worse: my shoe! The Tory Burch flats that I gotten as a gift for Christmas and had only wore a few times were the senseless casualty of a subway grate on Market Street. Fear suddenly crept over me. “What am I going to do?! I have places to go, people to see!” I felt helpless, as if I was naked almost. I take pride in my shoe collection, and for one to be taken away so violently, so senselessly, well, I was a mess.
I had 20 minutes to make a move. I did not have the funds to buy the exact pair again, so I needed to find a store and act quickly. As I walked down the street and felt the breeze flow through my right shoe, I wanted to cry. I felt like everyone around was staring at me thinking, “Cute outfit…but…um, what is wrong with her shoe? Is her foot too big for it or something?” [By the way I have size nine (YES NINE) feet, so the one positive aspect throughout this ordeal was that my right foot had a bit more space now.]
A few minutes later I found a store and picked out a pair of reasonably priced black flats. I sucked up my humiliation for being so clumsy and as I paid for the new shoes on my feet, the cashier asked me if I wanted to leave my old pair in the store. “No,” I responded. “I still have hope for them.”
