Beauty Review: Tarte’s Natural Eye Primer

Rating: Maybe Next Week
A quick recap: I, EpicureanGirl (or L’Épicurienne if you prefer), am going natural. Because of my recent “aha!” moment about cosmetics getting absorbed into our system and, well, it also gives me an excuse to try different lines of makeup and experiment. My first foray into “Organic and Natural” land has been with eye shadow primer. I have long been a devotee of the Urban Decay Primer Potion and have used it exclusively for the last couple of years. But what organic options are there out there for eye shadow primer? And would anything come close to the Primer Potion?
The best I found was the Tarte Natural Eye Primer. It goes on smooth, like the Primer Potion, but it seems to dry faster so I use my fingers to spread it quickly on my eyelid. It has a matte finish, comes in biodegradable packaging which we like, and is free of parabens, petrochemicals, phthalates, and sulfates.
The first and most noticeable difference with the Urban Decay Potion Primer is that it doesn’t make the eye shadows “pop”. On one hand, you have to use more eye shadow to build color, but on the other hand, I find that the Tarte eye primer gives one a more subtle and natural look that is not displeasing. Different primers for different occasions, right? For a big night on the town or if I’m just in the mood for a more dramatic look, I still reach for the Urban Decay. But for a day look, I find the Tarte works nicely.
In terms of longevity, it does a good job, keeping the eye shadow in place crease-free all day and all night. Now ladies, supposedly, it’s not just an eye primer, it’s a “firming” eyelid primer! (Chuckle, chuckle, “firming” eyelid primer! That’s funny!) Ok, so, I’ve been using this product for about a month now and I haven’t seen my eyelids firm or tighten a smidge. Nothing, rien, niente, NADA! Appearance of fine lines and wrinkles decreasing by 51% in just 10 minutes? PUH-LEASE! It sounds good but, yeah, in reality, not so much. If I get desperate to have my (already hooded) eyelids tightened, I’ll get a brow lift.
Ok, I’m done rolling my eyes and am ready to constructively continue this review. It would be nice to have different finishes of this product like the Primer Potion. Who knows, maybe Tarte will release different colors and finishes of this product if it really takes off.
All in all, this is the best organic alternative to the Primer Potion I have found so far. I’m not married to it but it’ll do nicely till something better comes along. Do YOU have any to recommend?

- Crush: It’s lust at its best. That thrill of something new, something exciting, something that gets your pulse racing. Will it last until next season? Maybe not. But who cares. It’s here and its now.
- Til Death do us Part: True Love. In it for the long haul. A product so near and dear to the heart, it’s practically family.
- Maybe next week: There’s no denying a basic attraction and a certain level of interest. We’re totally on board for a few dates but we’re not penning love letters or making commitments here.
- Let’s just be friends: Listen, if we bump into each other, that’s fine. There’s nothing really wrong with it. It’s just that there’s nothing really right either…
- Lost your number: Let’s just forget this whole thing ever happened
