Beauty Review: Sephora Lush Flush

Product: Sephora Lush Flush (Wine Lip & Cheek Stain) $12

Rating: Maybe next week

A while back, we talked cheek stains.  Ladies, summer cocktail season is approaching and we want lips that can withstand 10 sliders, fries, a bottle of champagne, several swirly margaritas, and lots, LOTS of kisses!  I’ve been sorely disappointed in the lipstick department on that front, so I thought I would give lip stains a try.  I was looking for a very natural lip stain that would last but give a very natural flush – appropriate for work, play, and that very serious cocktail hour.

I started with the Laura Mercier lip stain – beautiful, beautiful color, felt fabulous on my lips (lightweight and creamy) but didn’t last through a glass of water and a five kiss trial on my man.  Madame Mercier, j’adore your colors but s’il-vous-plaît a lip stain is supposed to STAIN (that would be teinter for vous), not rub off after an hour!  The NARS lip stain gloss was too bold (more like liquid lipstick), not the natural look I was going for.  The Tarte Natural Lip Stain with Lipsurgence Technology was also disappointing – leaving marks on my glass of water and, well, not really all that moisturizing.  Tarte, Baby, please don’t tease – if you say you are going to increase my lips’ moisture content by “6000%” (whatever that means), you better damn well deliver the goods!  Benefit’s Benetint is an expensive date.  I know it’s a cult favorite but I couldn’t get over the weird brush applicator and the $28 price tag… though, admittedly, it did do a good job with color (especially the posietint) and longevity.

Out of desperation, I decided to try the Sephora brand lip stain and… TA-DA! I found what I was looking for: a natural, sheer, lip stain with a sponge tip applicator that lasts through…well, at least a glass of water and a number of kisses, though not that entire bottle of champagne.  I recommend using the Lush Flush with lip balm, gloss, or your favorite lipstick.  In a pinch, it does a decent job as a cheek stain too.  Did I mention that it’s made from crushed grapes and has a “red wine extract” formula that is, supposedly, “loaded with anti-oxidents”?  Ha! Nice touch, Sephora!  You know we’re suckers for all things Vino!

I wouldn’t go as far as saying that Lush Flush and I are in it for the long haul, but, for $12 I’m totally satisfied with what it provides…  And I know that my “flushed” lips will last through at least the first 3 or 4 martinis.

Beauty Review Rating Codes:

  • Crush: It's lust at its best. That thrill of something new, something exciting, something that gets your pulse racing. Will it last until next season? Maybe not. But who cares. It's here and its now.
  • Til Death do us Part: True Love. In it for the long haul. A product so near and dear to the heart, it's practically family.
  • Maybe next week: There's no denying a basic attraction and a certain level of interest. We're totally on board for a few dates but we're not penning love letters or making commitments here.
  • Let's just be friends: Listen, if we bump into each other, that's fine. There's nothing really wrong with it. It's just that there's nothing really right either...
  • Lost your number: Let's just forget this whole thing ever happened
