When I was a little girl, I bought my mother the most special Christmas gift I could possibly imagine: a bright red Chanel lipstick. I somehow knew, at the tender age of 10, that Chanel was the cream of the crop and – clearly – my mother deserved the best. It was the perfect gift. Chanel’s aura – classic, elegant, timeless, luxurious – has stayed intact in my mind ever since. So why did it never occur to me to treat myself to a Chanel product? The many years spent in Catholic school learning about original sin? Did I come to associate that bright red lipstick with the apple handed to Eve by the serpent? Who knows?! One thing I do know is that I shouldn’t have waited this long to finally indulge in some Chanel! So, let me tell you about the new Rouge Coco and let’s see how long you resist temptation!
Rouge Coco:
- It delivers beautiful, vibrant, saturated color.
- It goes on smoothly and feels incredible – that “no lipstick” feeling.
- The color lasts very well (much longer than I anticipated!).
- It smells great. Unmistakably, it smells like luxury!
- The packaging screams elegance and the lipstick is shaped for perfect application.
- The range of colors, mon dieu, the colors! There is good reason why Mademoiselle is the most coveted color (most department stores are currently sold out). It’s a very wearable pinky coral… softer than red, bolder than your classic pink, it’s fabulous for spring. But Chanel developed an array of beautiful hues with different finishes (matte, pearl, shimmer) that are great for day or night. My other favorites include Organdi Rose and Legend.
Why am I not married to the Rouge Coco? The formula, though smooth, was not as hydrating as I expected it to be. Don’t get me wrong, it certainly does not dry out one’s lips but it didn’t seem to infuse them with moisture either. The price… Thirty dollars is expensive (cue catholic guilt about children starving in Africa) but the little devil solidly perched on my shoulder tells me it’s so right to spend that much. What’s a girl to do? For the moment, I’m content to bask in the aura of some Coco Chanel!
