THE URBAN GIRL'S SURVIVAL GUIDE

Spring Collections: Laura Mercier

Yes, there is fashion week, and that is all well and good (and ok–sometimes kind of creepy, no?) and then there is BEAUTY product fashion week.  And that is far more interesting (if also, at times, slightly odd) and affordable on this citygirl’s purse. So that is why we keep talking about the crazy beauty products that are lurking around versus say, what the hell is going on at Prada.

If you have been reading the blog, you know that our current obsession is with Laura Mercier:  A top make-up artist turned creative director of her namesake beauty line, Laura Mercier the brand has been around for the last 14 years, and really seems to be only gaining in recognition and awesomeness.  We’ve been sucked in by said awesomeness (it all starts with the tinted moisturizer–beware of the addiction!) and started spending tons of time lurking around the Laura Mercier counters, which is how we stumbled upon the Spring Picks Collection.

We are normally underwhelmed by some of the packaged goods that high-end product lines offer, but we found this one highly intriguing.  For $65, you get a good sized sampling of her primer (key to note: unlike Smashbox, this primer is water-based versus silicone-based. Neither is better than the other, they just feel different.  The water base sinks into your skin, the silicone sits on top of it), a cool and bright array of 8 eyeshadows, including a really REALLY lovely shade of navy that is absolutely FABULOUS, a dual-sided brush to apply said eyeshadows, an awesome neutral shade of lipgloss, and a proven no-run mascara.  It all comes in a lovely orange makeup bag that screams warmer weather…and potentially fatal choices of pink eyeshadow, but perhaps that is just us?

Laura Mercier calls it a $170 value for $65 (a brand insider told us that they traditionally lose money on these offerings, but it’s worth it because they create brand loyalty) and in this case, we agree with the price.  If you are new to the line, this product package is a good place to start.  If you have read CityGirls before, you know WE RAVE about the tinted moisturizer and the radiance moisturizer, so we also recommend starting there if you are looking to try things out.

Anyway, thank GOODNESS spring is here.  Now, it’s time for us to go and take all 8 eyeshadows off—we don’t think Laura intended for them to be worn all at once (but yet, we can’t help ourselves!)

Beauty Review Rating Codes:

  • Crush: It's lust at its best. That thrill of something new, something exciting, something that gets your pulse racing. Will it last until next season? Maybe not. But who cares. It's here and its now.
  • Til Death do us Part: True Love. In it for the long haul. A product so near and dear to the heart, it's practically family.
  • Maybe next week: There's no denying a basic attraction and a certain level of interest. We're totally on board for a few dates but we're not penning love letters or making commitments here.
  • Let's just be friends: Listen, if we bump into each other, that's fine. There's nothing really wrong with it. It's just that there's nothing really right either...
  • Lost your number: Let's just forget this whole thing ever happened
