THE URBAN GIRL'S SURVIVAL GUIDE

Things We LOVE: Cheese Fries (DC and Philly)

The cheese fry, like many things, is full of nuance and magic.  Oh yes, we said magic.  And today, instead of doing a happy hour review or restaurant review, we feel the need to reflect on the beauty of the fried potato, the rich flavor of the chili, and the orange-y-ness of the cheese. CHEESE. Yummmmmmmmmmmm.

In DC:

1. Ben’s Chili Bowl: But of course.  No DC list is complete without Ben’s on U-street.  Not only are the cheese fries good (we go with good versus orgasmic) but more importantly, they are LARGE. And really, in charge.  So therefore good. SO GOOD.

2. Johnny Rockets: Located in many places, we rate these cheese fries as “available” and therefore “good enough.”  They are a solid B.  They will never get to go to a top tier college, but then again, they are cheese fries so really, their future is now.

3. The Vienna Inn: We gotta give the twice-burned-down “restaurant” many props for never closing and always serving up a mean chili cheese fry.  Payment is on your honor and for most things you don’t need a fork or a knife.  This is our kind of place.  The fries are crispy goodness, the cheese is suspiciously orange, and our stomach was delightedly happy.

In Philly:

1. Personal Favorite: City View Diner at 16th and Spring Garden Street. Perfectly crisp fries with loads of lovely oozing cheese (liquid cheese of course!!)

2. Old School: Pat’s Cheesesteaks: 1237 E Passyunk Ave, Fries with double layer of whiz.

3. Addictive: Chickie and Pete’s World Famous Crab Fries: Multiple Locations.  If you are from Philly, I don’t need to say anymore.

^Totally agree. You need fake cheese for perfect cheese fries.
  • I love cheese fries too! I know that cheese wiz is in the axis of evil alongside donuts and koolaid but still, I prefer my fries to be covered with liquid cheese. Real cheese just crusts over in a sad pale blanket that makes it impossible to pull a fry loose.
