Trendspotting: Holiday Wear
Posted by Jess - 07/12/09 at 08:12 amI don’t know about you, but I spent the weekend reveling in Christmas activities. I was up north in Bethlehem (that’s the Pennsylvania town not the actual home to the 3 wise men) shopping and strolling through a postcard perfect snowglobe world. Impossible not to invoke the Christmas spirit in such a setting, I went home to complete my household decorations and lights AND holiday wardrobe assessment.
Maybe I should rename this post “traditionspotting” because while holiday wear is certainly subject to fashion trends, what I really love about dressing up this time of year is that you can indulge in some old classics. Red, for example, is something I never wear during the other 11 months of the year. I love red but I always have the feeling that it makes me look yellow…
Nonetheless, for December, I can’t get enough of reds and plaids and this year will be no exception. Depending on your occasion, there are a lot of fun choices out there this season. Metallics are wonderfully festive too and have a longer wearability timeline.

Can’t Afford a New Outfit?
A few accessories can go a long way. Headbands and barrettes are everywhere right now. Anything with glitter, red, or plaid is going to take a neutral outfit immediately into holiday territory. Flat broke? Try this. Last year, I received an early gift that was wrapped with a big gorgeous red ribbon. I saved it and wore the ribbon as a belt over a black sweater dress for my Christmas Eve party. It cost me nothing but was perfectly festive.

(Vintage Plaid Ribbon for sale on Etsy.com for $1.50)
