9 (ish) Day Challenge: Tick Tick Tick
Posted by Christie - 10/11/09 at 05:11 amFood Diary: Where did I PUT that thing?
Workout: Check! But troubles with the treadmill made this more of a “out” than “work.” Did that even make sense? Whatever, it wasn’t my most awesome trip to the gym.
Weight: How have I lost NO weight? (Ok, I get that the weekend happened, but c’mon, I worked out EVERY DAY LAST WEEK)
Cravings: Soooo strong. So. Strong. Whimper.
I’m starting to think that “common sense” never met my addiction to chocolate. And also, writing down what you eat is HARD. And annoying. Perhaps if I actually did it regularly it would help (strokes chin reflectively)…or, I could continue in denial? (Strokes chin with approval)
I have 4 days left. Is it time to cut out carbs? I fear it may be…

You CAN DO IT!

It all comes down to diet. It really does. Trust me, I know this.
Four days without chocolate or other triggers is EASY. Just get it done, and then you can cheer and celebrate.
But seriously, worry less about the working out and more about the eating.

THe Other Jess–I appreciate your words! I will indeed track food thing. Where do you stand on carbs?
November 10th, 2009 at 6:25 AM
Ha! Well, my official position on carbs is this: Your body needs them, but if you’re going for a quickie weight loss in a week, you DON’T need them. You’ll get enough from all the fresh fruit and veggies you are consuming. Right? *hint*
Pump the water, pump the fruit and veggies (veggies moreso than fruit, thanks to the sugars in fruit). Stick to lean proteins and low-fat dairy. If you’re craving some carbs, do some oatmeal or something whole grain, but pay attention to your servings. Treat yourself at the end of the day with one ounce (!!) of chocolate.
Back to the carbs for a second–if you were really focusing on good workouts and energy throughout the day, cutting carbs will get you in trouble. But for now, it’s all good!

Also, are you planning out what you’re eating in advance, or just writing it down in the aftermath? If you need to focus energy in one place, it’d be in the planning. Map out the next four days so you won’t even have to think about it, and then you can just check it off as you eat it. Add the extras that sneak in. Boom, done!

Planning it out in advance eh? I hadn’t thought of that! I’m also someone who doesn’t really know what has carbs (I am terrible). If I eat yogurt with blueberries for breakfast, and salad for lunch, with lean meat and veggies for dinner, is that all good? Can I have all natural peanut butter?
And splenda?
Also–you are awesome!

Part 1:
Ha! Thanks!
It’s all in the food, and it’s all in the planning. Working out is a nice side benefit that helps it all click along.
The carb topic is actually complicated, and even I don’t understand it sometimes. But really, almost everything has some kind of carb to it. You’re actually talking about cutting out STARCHES, which is usually a good idea for weight loss. Anyway, yogurt and berries for breakfast is good, because you’re getting some carbs (energy) and fiber (from the berries, for fullness). But you could be eating more, actually, without hurting your weight loss goals. I’d think you need more protein in the AM, to keep you going.
BIG salad for lunch with lots of crunchy veggies is perfect. Make sure there’s protein in there–get a rotisserie chicken tonight and tear all the meat off it. Put it on your salad tomorrow. Have a yogurt with lunch too, or a string cheese (part-skim). Dinner with a big plate of veggies and lean protein is perfect. Just be careful that your veggies aren’t peas and carrots–those are actually higher carb choices. Broccoli (which Your Jess hates!) or spinach is a better choice. High fiber, high water.
(to be continued…)

Part 2:
You can have fake PB, you can have all-natural–it’s all the same calories. (Here’s where people get tripped up–just because it’s natural or organic doesn’t mean it’s going to be better for weight loss. It has the same calories, just fewer chemicals or processes to get to your table!)
I have Splenda all the time! There are MANY arguments about how artificial sweeteners are bad (and not just cancer stuff), but for weight loss, it’s a godsend.

(I am having a devil of a time posting the rest of my ramblings! better be worth it!!)
By the way, I recommend the Sparkpeople site as a way to track stuff like protein and carbs. It’s relatively easy to navigate, and you just look up what you want to know about, and it’ll tell you all about the carbs, protein, and fat content. Pretty cool. They can even map out a diet for you, if you want, complete with a shopping list. (I don’t use that part of the site, but it’s there!)

The Other Jess- You ROCK! I will totally check out that site (just got back from working with my trainer who opened a can of whoop a** on me). Where do you stand on cereal (whole grain). I feel the need for more fiber. But I don’t know where to get it.
November 10th, 2009 at 8:27 AM
Fruits and veggies are a good start. I don’t think you’d do yourself any harm by adding a bowl full of fiber cereal to your AM routine…maybe a bowl of fiber cereal with berries and skim, instead of the yogurt and berries? They always say you should eat like a king at breakfast, a something-or-other-that’s-in-the-middle at lunch, and a pauper at dinner. Get a good start and you won’t be playing the I”m Hungry! catch-up game all day long. Sparkpeople can tell you fiber, if you need it to.
Also, and welcome to our 30s, but I also buy sugar-free Target brand metamucil powder to get some extra fiber. Raspberry flavor, doesn’t taste that bad–just crappy texture!
Good work with the trainer!! I’ll be at the gym tonight, working off the malt balls some jackass gave me yesterday as a present. I don’t even like them, and I can’t stop eating them!

I’m not a big fan of spinach either
. The rest of it sounds good though.
